American adventure part 2: Michiana

After the weekend in Chicago we spent the week in a house just over the Michigan border with the Spencers and older Mosedales.  5 minutes' walk from the shores of Lake Michigan, which looks like this:

It was lovely to have a family holiday, and thanks to Grandma and Grandpa for the provision of the accommodation.  The children spent so much time running around and playing together at the house which was really rather nice.

I started our first day there with a sunrise run along the beach.  In fact I ran all the way to Indiana and back (c. 1 mile).  As I'm the one with the camera, there aren't many holiday photos of me, so here's a runfie as the sun comes up.

We had a day at the beach.  A morning really, after which the consensus was that the sun was rather hot and the water rather cold.  It was a nice place to be though and we had the beach to ourselves.

Elspeth still needs to work on the knees-up, arms-clasped pose.

My favourite bit was stone skimming.  Good flat stones available.  The photo below was a surprisingly effective skim-stone-then-quickly-take-a-picture effort, with a flat horizon too.

I don't want to leave the impression that I was out skimming stones from the morning on the beach until sunset though; this was a different day.

Another highlight - of that day or some other - was smores.  Mmmm.

We had another sandy day, visiting the Indiana Dunes state park.  Despite not yet being Memorial Day and therefore not yet summer, it was plenty hot enough underfoot and overhead.  Pretty cool dunes though, even if the climb up mount Tom was a little bit testing for the smaller children.

Tom on Mount Tom.

Other stuff we did included a playground...

...also an amble around a nature reserve.  I think Grandpa is enjoying the Shoulders more than Tom.

We also saw a large kaleidoscope.  Happily this was just across from the nice deli we had lunch in in Three Oaks, so we didn't make a special trip to see it or anything.  Probably for the best.

We had a bit of a walk in New Buffalo.  This proed quite tiring for some of the children.

And we finished stage 2 with an evening walk along Lake Michigan (while Grandpa put the younger children to bed).  It was quite pretty.
